Science fiction is a must-love for everybody. It has the potential to be the binding force that allows for world peace; it’s that great. Science Fiction movies tackle hard topics like social justice and racism all the while staying action packed, dramatic and a splendor to watch. Each film brings something new to people’s ever growing theories about science and beyond. Besides the fact that sci-fi films make the watcher think, each film tends to fall into one of two categories; a work of sheer brilliance or a film so absurdly funny, that it tickles its audience with a bubbly happiness each time watched. So with no further ado here is my personal top ten sci-fi list.

10) Gravity (2013) – This film is a good intro into mainstream sci fi with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. the visual effects in this film are stunning, winning it many awards. Bio-medical engineer; Dr. Ryan Stone, is on her first space shuttle mission with astronaut Matt Kowalski, who is on his last command before retiring. As disaster strikes while they are in mid-orbit resulting in the destruction of their shuttle, the pair attempt to return to earth.  Unlike many sci-fi films, this film will make you feel more connected to the world.

9) E.T. the Extra – Terrestrial (1982) – A family friendly classic with important life lessons that make it good for children and adults alike. One night a group of aliens trip to earth is distrusted by a team of federal agents, leaving one of their own; E.T. behind. A young boy named Elliott finds E.T. in his backyard and develops a strong bond with it. Elliott’s siblings Michael and Gertie work together to help their new friend get back home while avoiding the feds. Tissues are recommended when you watch this movie.

8) Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – The Star Wars series is the supreme leader of all current sci fi films, the series has brought in some of the highest revenue in all of box office history. This film takes place 30 years after Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi, after the destruction of the second death star. The last Jedi Luke Skywalker has disappeared. The First Order has risen, looking to destroy Luke Skywalker. General Leia Organa and The Resistance looks for the Jedi to restore peace and justice. has Star Wars: The Force Awakens was held up to the highest of expectations considering some fans grew up on the prequels and some on the original trilogy.

7) Solaris (1972) – Neither the director nor the author of the original novel liked this film, yet it is brilliant in the most unconventional way. Psychologist Chris Kelvin is sent to investigate a mission  aboard space station orbiting the planet Solaris. Kelvin discovers the station is in a very odd situation. Apparitions begin to appear from Kelvin’s memories, messing with his and the other scientists life aboard Solaris Station. Kelvin has to decide whether the venture should continue and if he should return to earth or to Solaris to reconnect with all he has lost and loved. The dialogue is mildly dry, the film is long and the scenes drag on but the way the director uses science fiction to make us question our reality and length that forces us to reflect make this film extraordinary.

6) Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan (1982) – Star Trek is basically the forefather of all popular sci film. Thanks to my sci-fi loving mother I was introduced to star trek and this gem, was the movie that started it all for me. Admiral James T. Kirk is an instructor at starfleet academy on his old ship The Enterprise. The training camp becomes a mission when his path crosses with his exiled nemesis Khan Noonien Singh. Khan plots for revenge and destruction of the universe. Captain Kirk and his trainees must stop him before he turns the life-generating Genesis device into the ultimate weapon. Star Trek is a classic and this movie was based off of the the best and most popular episode of the entire series, this is a guaranteed good film.
