Awards season is coming and there are some new faces on the scene; and some faces you just didn’t notice before. Here are the up and coming names to know. Alicia Vikander The Swedish beauty first gained international fame for her performance in Denmark’s Oscar winning The Royal Affair. But 2015 is the year that put her on the map with four high profile performances, including as an AI in Ex-Machina. Her performance in The Danish Girl has been receiving as much recognition as Eddie Redmayne’s, and the decision to run her in the supporting over lead category means that her name is definitely one to listen for come Awards season. Brie Larson If someone had told me five years ago that Envy Adams was now the frontrunner in a packed best actress race (yay!) I would have been shocked. I’m sure for Brie Larson the attention that indie hit …

Every summer Toronto is home to numerous free outdoor film screenings. Here’s a short list of the ones I will definitely be at. Come say hi, but “you can’t sit with us!” Strictly Ballroom (1992) David Pecaut Square, Wednesday July 8 @ 7:30 One of the earliest live action films I was ever exposed to, Strictly Ballroom has been a personal favorite since childhood. This Australian, ballroom dancing, romantic comedy is the premiere feature from Baz Luhrmann in his Red Curtain Trilogy, that went on to include Moulin Rouge.  Strictly Ballroom will have you dancing, laughing, and imitating the Australian accents for days! It showcases their ability for thrilling drama, as well as carefully scripted and wacky comedy. The cinematography is stunning, and the …

Here’s some ideas for you and your Mom (or Grandma) to give a shot. Maybe you’ll find a new favourite, or rediscover an old one!    Steel Magnolias (1989) This film is the epitome of successful dramedy. The film is an incredibly poignant and realistic representation of not just mother-daughter relationships, but also female friendship as a whole that will have you in both stitches and tears. Not sold yet? Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine spend good portions of the film pithily bantering. I would actually wear a shirt that says, “I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux!”.    Mermaids (1990) Cher and Winona Ryder star in this hilarious take on life in the early 1960’s. As mother and daughter Rachel and Charlotte Flax, they are complete opposites. …

As usual, there’s some favorites, and some you might not have heard of on here. Enjoy! Amelie Not only one of the best Paris films of all time, this is also one of the most beautiful films of all time. The cinematography, color scheme and of course, Audrey Tatou as the title character, are flawless. If you can handle the subtitles one watch will put this film on your favorites list. Available on Amazon Instant Video. Before Sunset Having never seen this follow up to Richard Linklater’s landmark Before Sunrise, I can’t make any promises. However, given the intelligence and emotional depth of both lead actors in the first film, …
